"If ye love wealth greater than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest for freedom, go home and leave us in peace. We seek not your council nor your arms. Crouch down and lick the hand that feeds you, and may posterity forget that ye were our countrymen." - Samuel Adams

The EU needs to speak with a single voice. But when that voice isn't speaking French...well....you know.

French finance minister Francis Mer said France should make "major efforts" to cut its deficit but will "choose its own path" in doing so.
Mer was speaking after EU finance ministers agreed that France should make "considerably larger" reductions this year than planned and should cut by at least 0.5 pct of GDP in 2004.

However, the Netherlands said it could not "support a different treatment in the case of France" and therefore opposed the recommendation proposed by the European Commission.

Denmark too wanted fellow member states to take a tougher line with France, which in 2002 breached the stability and growth pact's deficit limit of 3 pct of GDP and is forecast to do so again this year.

Those Danes and Dutch...they should know a good opportunity to shut up, eh?
