Now de Villepin sees a need for consensus on Iraq. Now that France doesn't have to do any of the actual fighting and there is money to be had it is time for working closely and with consensus on the issue.

French Foreign Minister Dominique de Villepin said there was a "very broad consensus" among EU and NATO members on giving the UN a central role in post-war Iraq.

But, speaking after talks with EU and NATO foreign ministers, including US Secretary of State Colin Powell, he did not say whether the view was supported by the United States.

"After the contacts I have had ... a very broad consensus is emerging to really rely on the United Nations," he told reporters.
