RAAF pilots are now flying missions in Iraq.

For the first time in 30 years RAAF combat aircraft have flown combat missions over foreign territory, escorting United States airborne tankers and early warning aircraft.

But the Australian Defence Force has refused to reveal more than the most cursory details, citing operational security.

Veteran F/A-18 Hornet pilot Wing Commander Steve (first name only for security reasons) told reporters Prime Minister John Howard had outlined elements of the operation which involved escorting "high value assets" US airborne early warning and tanker aircraft.
