"If ye love wealth greater than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest for freedom, go home and leave us in peace. We seek not your council nor your arms. Iraq is lighting the oil fields.

Seventeen oil fields in the south of Iraq were ignited by Iraqi soldiers today. As a Rosbalt correspondent reports, this has been confirmed by the Iraqi Defense Ministry. This is a preventative measure, according to the ministry, and is aimed at delaying the possible advance of US troops into southern Iraqi territory.

Certain sources have said that the Iraqi government may have mined up to 52 of the largest oil fields in the country.
