"If ye love wealth greater than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest for freedom, go home and leave us in peace. We seek not your council nor your arms. Crouch down and lick the hand that feeds you, and may posterity forget that ye were our countrymen." - Samuel Adams

The 101st Airborne will bu fully deployed to the Gulf within a week.

Troops from the US Army's elite 101st Airborne Division were on the move from their base in Kentucky for the Gulf in a snowballing US military buildup that will soon include a sixth aircraft carrier and B-2 stealth bombers, officials said.

Most of the division's 20,000 troops are expected to be in the region within a week, said John Minton, a spokesman for the 101st Division in Fort Campbell, Kentucky.

"We're in the deployment process right now," said Minton. "It began approximately a week ago; as of noon today, we will have deployed approximately 5,500."

The division, dubbed the Screaming Eagles, specialises in air assaults deep into enemy territory, airlifting troops into battle by helicopter under cover of AH-64 Apache helicopter gunships.

News of the movement followed announcements that the navy is sending the aircraft carrier USS Nimitz to the Gulf and that the air force's sole B-2 stealth bomber wing has received orders to deploy "for potential combat operations".

"Less than a handful will restage some place," a US defence official said of the B-2s.

The navy said an amphibious assault group led by the helicopter carrier USS Iwo Jima will leave from Virginia Tuesday with 4,000 marines.
