"If ye love wealth greater than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest for freedom, go home and leave us in peace. We seek not your council nor your arms. Crouch down and lick the hand that feeds you, and may posterity forget that ye were our countrymen." - Samuel Adams

al Qaeda has apparently planned a couple of attempts to assassinate Indonesian President, Megawati Sukarnoputri.

Under interrogation by US authorities, the senior al-Qa'ida figure, Omar al-Faruq, alleged he was involved in two separate assassination plots, in 1999 and 2001, targeting Ms Megawati, according to a summary of his testimony seen by The Australian. The Kuwaiti national, captured in Indonesia on June 5 and turned over to the CIA, also referred to plans to target 40 other prominent Indonesians.

A plot to assassinate Ms Megawati collapsed when a Malaysian man earmarked for the job blew off his leg with a bomb, according to Mr al-Faruq's statement.

It would seem to me that this would be a bad plan. While outside of Indonesia we see Megawati as somewhat incoherent policywise and reluctant to act, Indonesians love her. She is the daughter of the first Indonesian President, Sukarno, and is seen as a direct link to the time before Suharto. al-Qaeda or some other militant Islamist terrorist group assassinating her would turn virtually the entire population of Indonesia against them. The military would not stand for it and they would be hunted across the nation.
