A very good piece from Finland that studies anti-Western and anti-American feelings from 19th Century Russia to today's intelligensia. So it is not only fanatics like Osama bin Laden and Vladimir Zhirinovski who dream of the destruction of the Western great power. Opponents of the West also include a large number of key European thinkers.
Also, the article looks into the 'rise' of the 'right' in Europe:
"There are those who dictate what can be said, and those who will not say anything. However, they do go out and vote. If some area is shut outside all intellectual activity, then Western culture will have crossed an important threshold, and we are rather close to this right now." All possible attempts have been made to crush the xenophobic message of the far right in Europe. Parties have been banned, the opinions of right-wingers have been censored in the media; an entire country has been boycotted - but nothing has helped. "The lot of the reactionary is always a miserable one", Vihavainen says. "The right wing ideology is a new power on the political field, and all attempts to extinguish it will only strengthen it."
