Nearly 50,000 Israelis gathered for a demonstration supporting pullout of Israeli forces from Gaza and the West Bank. I agree with the sentiment but there has to be an agreement in place first and the amount of the withdrawl needs to be discussed. Of course, the important lesson of this story is that Israel is a society where this can happen. I am sure there must be 50,000 Palestinians, Jordanians, Saudis, Lebanese etc. who are horrifed by what they see Arafat and Hamas say and do. Could you imagine what would happen to them if they decided to protest those actions? That would be a lot of 'collaberators', 'marked' for punishment.
The thing that the media overlooks is that these people aren't necessarily peace-protestors. Just as the dissenting reservists are not against military action targeting terrorists. They just think security should be reduced within coherent barriers. A number of the people there are even supportive of recent military operations.
Israeli entertainer Dudu Topaz praised Sharon for the results of Israel's military offensive in the West Bank last month, when Israeli forces invaded Palestinian towns and refugee camps in an attempt to root out terrorists. "Sharon is good at wars," he said. "Prove you are good at peace."
