In a further attampt to move his military away from fundamentalist influence. Musharref has declared that there will be a new anti-terror force created.

The proposed Central Investigation Unit (CIU) would be set up by drawing the most capable officers from the law enforcement agencies. This unit would be equipped with latest available technology. Members of this force would be sent to the United States, France, Japan and Britain for extensive training, he added. The interior secretary said that a strict criterion for selection of officers and staff to be inducted into the new unit would be adopted and those selected would be given special incentives in terms of foreign training and other facilities.

They are also nearly doubling Education spending next year.

"We the more fortunate, the enlightened, the powerful, must take stock of the present literary scenario of the country which explains that educating girls yields higher rates of return than any other investment available in the developing countries," she [Education Minister Zubaida Jalal] said. She wrapped up her speech with one of Quaid-i-Azam's sayings, "No sacrifice of time or personal comfort should be regarded as too great for advancement of the cause of education".

With some gentle and fairly hands off influence Pakistan could easily become a model Islamic nation. Pundits point to Turkey but, always fail to follow it up by reminding people that Arabs have no deep love for the Turks who, in the from of the Ottomans, ruled them with a heavy hand for a very long time.
