"If ye love wealth greater than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest for freedom, go home and leave us in peace. We seek not your council nor your arms. Crouch down and lick the hand that feeds you, and may posterity forget that ye were our countrymen." - Samuel Adams

I don't think it was US pressure that caused Sharon to call off a Gaza offensive. The move in the West Bank that, despite cries of 'war crimes', was very effective in it's stated goals proved that Israel was willing to do what was necessary. This is bolstered by the fact that the people were firmly behind the offensive.

No, I think there were some serious offers from Egypt, Jordan and the Saudis that they will lay it Arafat. Notice, that while the Israelis were preparing, we didn't see too much in the way of inflammatory rhetoric from him. I think he was dealing with some heavy flak from the Arabs. If the Israelis were willing to call of the attack, I expect we will see some things start to happen very soon. Hamas and the others will use this as a piece of propoganda. Proof that the Israelis are afraid of them and proof that more attacks are necessary.
