Turmoil in the Palestinian Authority?

The Palestinian Authority appears to be in turmoil after Prime Minister Mahmoud Abbas cancelled talks with his counterpart Ariel Sharon, saying his government was suffering an "internal crisis".

Palestinian officials said the crisis involved opposition within Palestinian President Yasser Arafat's Fatah political movement, of which Mr Abbas is a senior member, to the PM's negotiating strategy in a new with Israel.

"Abu Mazen (Abbas) has cancelled the meeting planned for Wednesday with Sharon because of an internal crisis that emerged during the Fatah Central Committee meeting last night," a senior Palestinian official said.

Unfortunately there is no way Abu Mazen is powerful (or physically safe enough right now) to disobey Arafat for too long.
