Organizations that Canada still doesn't think are terrorist organizations

JEMAAH ISLAMIYAH

Base: Southeast Asia

Recent activities: Bombed a nightclub in Bali on Oct. 12, killing almost 200, including two Canadians.

Banned by: United States, Britain and Australia

Canadian concerns: Canadian citizen Mohammed Mansour Jabarah was trained by al-Qaeda and dispatched to Southeast Asia to help Jemaah Islamiyah organize bombings.

ABU SAYYAF GROUP

Base: Philippines

Recent activities: The kidnapping of 20 people from the Dos Palmos tourist resort on Palawan on May 27, 2001. Several abductees were murdered, including a U.S. citizen.

Banned by: United States, Britain and Australia

Canadian concerns: Canada continues to warn Canadian travellers they could be kidnapped by Abu Sayyaf.

AL AQSA MARTYRS BRIGADE

Base: Palestinian territories

Recent activities: On Jan. 5, a pair of suicide bombers set off explosives in a Tel Aviv shopping district crowded with civilians, killing 22. The group said the attack was carried out by a suicide unit ''with the help of Allah.''

Banned by: United States

Canadian concerns: Has support among some pro-Palestinian elements of Canada's Arab and Muslim populations.

POPULAR FRONT FOR THE LIBERATION OF PALESTINE

Base: Palestinian territories

Recent activities: Assassinated Israeli Tourism Minister Rehavam Ze'evi on Oct. 17, 2001.

Banned by: United States

Canadian concerns: PFLP member Mahmoud Mohammad Issa Mohammad, a convicted hijacker, lives with his family in Ontario. Since 1988, he has managed to fight deportation through the courts.

BASQUE FATHERLAND AND LIBERTY (ETA)

Base: Spain.

Recent activities: Detonated three bombs on June 21 to coincide with a European Union summit in Seville. Tourists and children were injured.

Banned by: United States and Britain

Canadian concerns: Ottawa issued a travel warning last month cautioning Canadians that ETA had threatened to kill tourists.

LIBERATION TIGERS OF TAMIL EELAM

Base: Sri Lanka

Recent activities: Following two decades of violence, the LTTE entered into peace negotiations with the Sri Lankan government; however, there are recent reports the group continues to recruit children.

Banned by: United States and Britain

Canadian concerns: The LTTE raises millions of dollars a year in Canada through crime, front organizations and extortion migrants.
